EU & Republic of Korea Digital Partnership Meeting

On March 26, the EU and the Republic of Korea held the second Digital Partnership Council in Brussels. During the meeting, the EU and Korea reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate in key digital technologies for the benefit of citizens and economies. They agreed to continue the cooperation on semiconductors, 5G and beyond, quantum technology, platforms, artificial intelligence (AI), as well as cybersecurity, and defined other areas of cooperation such as network connectivity. 


As key outcomes to the council, the EU and the Republic of Korea have decided to collaborate on a call for proposals on research topics in the fields of Radio Access Networks (RAN) and 6G technology, and both also recognised the importance of the communication channel on AI established in 2023 to define common approaches and ensure trustworthiness and innovation, including generative AI. 

They also took steps to share information on cybersecurity trends, best practices on SMEs digitalisation and to cooperate on ICT standardisation in international for a to promote their common vision. 


Thierry Breton, Commissioner for Internal Market, said: “The EU and Korea are leading digital economies and strategic like-minded partners. Today, we took steps to further work together on crucial areas such semiconductors, 5G/6G, cybersecurity, AI, online platforms and connectivity, and joined forces on research projects. Together, we can promote global standards, support innovation and competitiveness and create further opportunities for our economies.” 


In this context, INSTAR aims to support all Digital Partnerships — including the EU-Korea partnership. The discussions that took place during this second Digital Partnership Council highlighted areas of cooperation that INSTAR supports, such as AI, Cybersecurity, Quantum Technologies, and 5G/6G
